French Case vs Pillowcase

What is the difference between a French case and a pillowcase?

A french case, more commonly called a sham, is a pillow cover that is designed to fit snugly around the pillow insert, often with a flap or "envelope" closure to ensure a tidy, tailored look. A pillow case, sometimes called an American case, is a simple open-ended fabric covering designed to encase a pillow. Unlike French cases, it lacks an envelope closure, leaving one side open for easy insertion and removal of the pillow.
