Applique, the Art of Layered Fabrics

Applique is a needlework technique wherein the design is ‘applied’ using fabric stitched down to another piece of fabric.
First, the monogram or design is sketched. Following the lines of a chalked pattern, the applique artist then cords a piece of fabric onto another. The excess fabric is cut away, leaving behind the finished design.
Applique is a rare and labor-intensive technique with comparable work difficult to find in today’s world, making Leontine’s approach truly unique.

What is applique? How is it different from embroidery?
Applique is an embellishment technique in which a trim fabric is applied to a piece of material by sewing with a corded stitch into the outline of a monogram or decorative border. The excess material is then carefully clipped away to reveal the design. With embroidery, the embellishment is created with thread only as the decorative element.
Can I request a custom border, monogram, or motif?
We are well known for our vast collection of monogram and border styles that, when combined with your custom color combination, compliment your décor perfectly. In many cases, an existing Leontine design is the perfect fit for your project. With that said, there are times when the customer provides outside inspiration for their monogram or border. When that occurs, we will work with you to turn that inspiration into a bespoke design. In these situations, a design fee is included on your final invoice.
Can Leontine applique a design onto an item I already have?
We do not work on customer’s own materials (COM). Instead, we invite you to share with us those special pieces you wish to incorporate into your project so that we can design complementary items that bring your vision to life.
Can I put my applique linens in the washing machine?
All of Leontine Linens products, including applique, are entirely machine washable and dryer-safe. All pieces are meant to be used and cared for at home. We have a zero dry clean policy for the linens we make!
Can I iron my applique linens?
Yes! Ironing or pressing your linens adds polish but is by no means required. Pique blanket covers and shams can be placed directly from the dryer onto the bed with some hand-pressing and straightening with excellent results. Because of the high-quality cotton used for sheet sets, these items do look relaxed if you skip the iron. Linen items, whether decorative shams or table linens, are the most likely to require pressing, but this can be minimized if line dried. We do not recommend pressing towels or quilts!
How long will an applique set of linens take to create?
Our linens are handcrafted to order, and lead times vary depending on the product and complexity. Here’s a general guide: Bed, Bath, and Table Linens with applique take approximately 12 weeks, while Plain Goods, Accessories, Bed Clothes, Down, and Poly Items take approximately 4 weeks.
Please note that this lead time begins once the order is fully approved and invoiced. Large-scale orders often require additional lead time, which will be discussed as the details of the order are identified. Your sales team member will provide you with an estimated lead time as you finalize your order. If you have a particular need-by date, please share that with us so that we can help you to place your order by the necessary lead time in order to meet your requested date.
