Our Technique for

Embroidery

Embroidery, an Intricate Art Form

A purple monogram

Embroidery is the art of stitching designs onto fabric, creating patterns and motifs with exceptional precision and detail.

Our sketch artist draws your desired design and then guides a nearly 100-year-old machine to create tiny holes onto vellum so that the pattern can be transferred to fabric with chalk. Our embroidery artist follows the curves of the letters or patterns to sew down the design on a hand-guided machine.

Unlike mass-produced embroidery, which relies on digitized patterns, Leontine’s work is entirely handmade, giving each piece a bespoke, lasting quality that cannot be replicated.

Embroidery FAQs

What does hand-guided mean?

Our embroidered linens are expertly stitched by our expert seamstresses using hand-guided sewing machines. This means that the artisan is personally controlling the machine to interpret the design being embellished.  The seamstress controls the thickness of the stitch by carefully moving the piece through the machine while controlling the speed of the needle with a foot pedal. Our process ensures that your linens are made with the utmost care, and it also means that no two pieces of ours will be exactly alike. They are pieces of hand-sewn art.

Can I request a custom embroidered border or monogram?

We are very well known for our vast collection of monogram and border styles that, when combined with your custom color combination, compliment your décor perfectly.  In many cases, an existing Leontine design is the perfect fit for your project.  With that said, there are times when the customer provides outside inspiration for their monogram or border.  When that occurs, we will work with you to turn that inspiration into a bespoke design.  In these situations, a design fee is included on your final invoice.

What kind of thread does Leontine use for embroidery?

Leontine Linens sources the finest threads that offer both a wide color palette that corresponds seamlessly with our linen and poplin collection, as well as being known for their durability and colorfastness. Various stitch styles require different thread weights, which we attempt to offer in a consistent color palette. We can provide cuttings for approval to assist you in the selection process.

Can I iron my embroidered linens?

Yes! Ironing or pressing your linens adds polish but is by no means required. When pressing embroidery, we recommend pressing from the reverse side of the fabric so that the monogram remains raised. You can even layer or pad with a towel to help keep the monogram from compressing. Alternately, you may find that by removing your linens from the dryer while warm and still slightly damp, you are able to hand-press them, to avoid the iron altogether.

How long does an embroidered item take to create?

Our linens are handcrafted to order, and lead times vary depending on the product and complexity. Here’s a general guide: Bed, Bath, and Table Linens with embroidery take approximately 12 weeks, while Plain Goods, Accessories, Bed Clothes, Down, and Poly Items take approximately 4 weeks.

Please note that this lead time begins once the order is fully approved and invoiced. Large-scale orders often require additional lead time, which will be discussed as the details of the order are identified. Your sales team member will provide you with an estimated lead time as you finalize your order.  If you have a particular need-by date, please share that with us so that we can help you to place your order by the necessary lead time in order to meet your requested date.
